Tell me true now, great God almighty,
was there ever any woman more beautiful than
Patti Smith? Cos I just could
not believe it. She and she alone can
still freeze me right here in my footsteps when I
hear that voice singing, soaring
like a furious eagle or an afflicted angel,
gouged and galled by so much useless pain
down along the ground. But she goes on
flying just like she does and always will,
so high above us, up so high on wings of
glorious rebellion.
This is a cute poem. I like that you characterized Patti as a resilient woman who's so 'far above' everyone else in terms of beauty and love.
ReplyDeletetruthfully if you ever look at pix of patti smith you'll see it's just impossible to accuse her of physical beauty. but if you listen to her, like singing "high on rebellion" on the easter lp, then you'll know exactly what i'm talking about. she hurtles you directly out of your body and into a zone of transcendence, and maybe we all much look much the same on the inside of our skins, but patti's soul is so magical that it carries us far away and it can't get much more beautiful than that.
