They barred and sealed up the door
after the devil had finally gone,
never one word of apology wasted on
the hell that they put everyone through.
They sent our good friend packing
for a single infraction that's
nobody's business anyway, and then they
insisted that we play by their
playground rules.
This must be the new golden age
of hypocrisy,
so I counsel renegade action.
Take the law in your own hands.
But as for me, I'm already gone.
Your eyes are filled with tears
and sadness when you really ought to
be celebrating with a glad heart.
None of us know how the future unfolds.
You were thrown overboard from the
ship of fools where the rules only apply
if the spinner stops on a red square.
These days and nights of peace and music
will twine like flowers through your hair,
and I swear I don't care about the
rumors and innuendo.
This must be the new golden age
of hypocrisy,
but your true friends will not abandon you.
All you have to do is open your eyes and
realize who they truly are.

*Sigh*, I wrote a pretty lengthy comment on this earlier today but the site got moody and vacuumed my musings.
ReplyDeleteTechnically- I really fancy the way you break the general rhythm by the repeated 'of hypocrisy', it gave the piece a sort of ominous, melodious sound.
The ideology is pretty thought-provoking. I'm not sure if that's what you meant but it got me thinking. Hypocrisy is in the blood of humanity. It existed from the very dawn of civilization. Men set down rules and it was generally implied that those rules were holy, ever-lasting and beyond reasoning. But they always did change. The political system, the morality, religion, the law- they change time and again, leaving us with the impression that nothing is stable and no commandments or laws are unreliable. One day, they tell you the Earth is carried on the back of four elephants and then voila! Suddenly it's round. One day there are a thousand Gods, and more spawning every day, and then on comes Judaism and we feel deceived for suddenly the religious axiom of countless ages is shattered. Yes, hypocrisy is the way of the society, in a way.
I like the ambiguity of the "All you have to do is open your eyes and
realize who they truly are."- you can't trust anyone, eh?
I really liked the one/gone/on rhyming in the opening line.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the contrast between the lines 'your eyes are filled with tears' and 'celebrating with a glad heart.' The mixture of joy and sorrow here is wonderful.
:)
when society rewards all the worst in human nature it gets really hard remembering how to distinguish friend from foe. or not to distinguish, but to make the anti-social leap of embracing the renegade ideology.
