On the Wings of That Great Speckled Bird

What fell crime have we
accomplished here? The
Alexandrian libraries are
burnt down a million times
over and over again! The
snares of temptation and
overflowing cauldrons of
bubbling adrenalin betray
these white hands. Cain's
not to blame; our hearts
were broken when a boy's
dog dipped his tongue in
a pat of butter.

  1. "betray these white hands"- I wonder if this is meaningfully racist- racism is certainly one of those crimes so it would definitely be a nice touch.

"Cain's not to blame"- what a deep statement. It overthrows religion AND pointless finger-pointing at the same time. Somehow I found the pat of butter part quite funny and amusing. I'm not sure if I understand this, but I think you are implying our crimes are the result of our own genetic heritage? The Speckled Bird title seems to suggest this more than anything. The specks on the wings are there to stay, from dawn to dusk, inborn and inherent- be they good or foul- they are here to stay(though with science marching on and eugenics and genetics I don't really feel confident about making ANY statements about what we can or can't do).

  2. "Fell crime." Nice word choice. The word 'fell' is so gentle (which contrasts its meaning perfectly).

"Cain's not to blame." Ah, yes, the son of Adam. Nice religious allusion. It's very interesting that the speaker suggests that Cain is not, in fact, to blame for his murderous tendancies - perhaps it was merely a 'choice' and cannot be understood in terms of 'right' and 'wrong'? I don't know...I'm just thinking out loud here...
