What scapegoat can we raise up?
What superhero to praise, to
Flatter his ego until his humanity
Catches up with him, betraying his
Feet of clay, and we're compelled to
Cast him over the cliff? Or shall it be
The promise of Heaven-on-Earth,
The superhero recast in the
Social order itself? Shall we place
Blind faith in society that we
May avoid personal confrontation
With unfiltered reality? Mommy!
Daddy! Preserve us from the wolves!
Interesting, I'm not sure if that's what your superhero refers to but I couldn't help but think of Nietzsche's overmen. And then you have utopia, perhaps a socialistic community and you discard those as no more than proxy-filters to sever our bonds from reality. We put our trust in others, only to suspend the trust and responsibility upon ourselves. Mass social consciousness struggles to relieve the tension from one unit by uniform distribution of force(and goods) throughout the whole system. The problem is, life pretty much depends on tension for survival and progress.
ReplyDeleteheroes and governments and santa claus probably won't save you from your personal demons and other foes or even chance antagonists. adherents of the left hand way that campbell speaks of know these things without having to work through them. what's wrong with conventional wisdom is that it's conventional; it worked before, and times change. incurable conservatism is the psychological; nay, pathological; requirement to see the futures as a mirror reflection of the past. the human reality processor prefers always to farm out speculation about future histories to the professionals -- anyone but me! ostriches everywhere i look in open pastures overrun with perilous, hungry lions, and not a few of them are professional bureaucrats alegedly working for us; no, those actually are the vampire bats nightly sucking your life away.........just....wake up!
